FERNANDO DOESN’T SHARE HER ANXIOUSNESS. In fact, he’s more relaxed than ever. Seeing that his opponent is no more than a child, one at perfectly good face kicking height, he deems this no more than a training match for a hopeful young trainer.

“Good afternoon,” he greets, standing on his side of the podium.

Several Pokeballs line his belt. Most of them are set to lean on the right side with a few distinctly placed on the leftmost portion of his hips.

“I hope you’ve been enjoying yourself so far, trainer. What battle format would you like?”

HER FIRST ANSWER SOLVES NOTHING. Almost as if they have no meaning behind them. But Fernando doesn’t hold that against her. Tempered expectations are to be had with children. As the future generation, the least he can do is show some patience for someone with the ambition to participate.

So he wears his smile in good faith and is ultimately rewarded.

“Sounds good.”

Fernando measures his Pokeballs and looks between them to decide a suitable matchup.

“Do you have any badges, Eris?”

He assumes the answer is no but sets it as a courtesy above all else.

AS EXPECTED, zilch. But she goes on to shed more light than Fernando could have hoped for. While knowing who the Gym Leaders are is far from an accomplishment, for her to know both of them from exchanges is surprising. Maybe she’s the child of someone important?

He shrugs the question off for later with a muffled chuckle.

“Let’s hope so, then.”

He picks a particular Pokeball he had intended to save for later.

“Well, I suppose this could be your first one. Try your best and we’ll see how well you do.”

The fact she has a Jolteon this early is telling. Unless it’s been raised as an Eevee by her personally, it has to have been inherited. It’s the only way he could fathom it obeying her in a domesticated manner. Not that it matters. Whether her power is borrowed or inherited, it’s still hers.

Fernando’s choice in Pokemon is a tiny Cutiefly. The fairy type Pokemon flies in place, letting out a high pitch buzz as it looks back at Fernando with cheery eyes.

“We’ll be battling this time, Cutiefly.”

And that’s enough to get it to turn in place to stare at Eris and her Jolteon with beady eyes.

THUNDER LASHES OUT IN A VICIOUS ARC. Yellow flashes threaten to singe everything in their way. In an instance, it passes over, with no one able to tell if the attack landed. When the light cuts past the Cutiefly is unharmed, narrowly missing as it rides the tides of a SILVER WIND draft.

“Battle routine set!”

The fist sized Pokemon may seem harmless and non-threatening but it’s distinctively smol size makes it much harder to hit. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said in return. Glitter fills the air as its dainty wings flap.

“Execute.”

It blinks and suddenly a DAZZLIING GLEAM erupts, bright light impairing anything looking toward it.

DISCHARGE PROVES MUCH MORE EFFECTIVE. The way the electrical attack dances around the field means there’s little escape. Try as the Cutiefly might, no amount of aerial updraft will allow it to strafe out of harm’s way.

Tingles course through its body. An annoy buzz gets swept away in the wind. The repeated beat of its appendages strum up a light breeze before a sudden FAIRY WIND blasts toward the Jolteon.

THE INSECT START TO FLY AWAY IMMEDIATELY. But it cannot out speed the oncoming mutt. The Jolteon’s agility cuts the distance in half, diminishing over time. Up until it lunges with a menacing THUNDER FANG.

Cutiefly is no more than a flying chew toy. It sits in the Jolteon’s mouth, caught between sharp fangs, as it buzzes loudly. Numerous STUN SPORES plume from its tiny fur, scattering like pollen well into the Jolteon’s still open mouth.

Yummy.

AND EAT IT SHALL. When the sudden Stun Spore has no effect the Cutiefly has no recourse but to try and wriggle free. It continues to struggle up until the THUNDER strikes. Electricity surges through both bodies with the Jolteon’s teeth acting as a conductor to electrify the insect as well.

When it dissipates the Pokemon lies battered and bruised. It barely slips out from between the Jolteon’s canines and deeper into its mouth. With no other escape than further in, the Cutiefly ventures deeper. Unfortunately, it proves too big to pass into Jolteon’s stomach.

Effectively, it lodges itself into Jolteon’s throat with no intent of being spat up.
